This all reminds me of a time a few years ago when I read an article in the Boston Globe about a physics professor from Iowa who claimed to have discovered a "black box" way to remove radioactivity. I sneered at the idea, until a friend of mine pointed out that the professor didn't say how long you had to leave the radioactive material in the box....
